0.V.0. AND T.N.A. V. O BATTEBY N.Z.A.

This match took place on the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club's Ground on Thursday afternoon last, and was declared to have resulted m a win for the C.Y.O. and T.N.A. by one run on tho first innings, after a most exciting game. On examining the score-book, however, we find that while Corporal Brown only made 2 he was credited m the total with 4. Thus tho Artillery wiu by one run. The weather, which m tho morning was very wet, fortunately cleared up for the play m the afternoon, and but for a smart Bhower about 3 o'clock, was everything that could bo desired. A good many spectators were present, the Ladies being m the majority. The wicket, owing to the rain, was a bit dead, but played true enough, the bowlers finding it a bit slippery. The C.V.C. and Navnls playing two men short won tbe toss and, went m to bat, totalling 72, of which Captain Wright with 10, Birrell 9, Godby V, Kett 9, were the principal scorers, the latter making a fine hit to square leg for 5. Cotter and Sergt. Hughes wero the most successful bowlers for tho Battery. The fielding of the Battery was much hotter than Bhown m previous matches, excepting behind the wickets, no less than 20 extras being registered. The Battery taking the wickets scored 73, of which Gooch with a well hit 21, was top scorer of the match, Melton not out 12, and Bom. Hughes 8, playing pluckily and well at a critical point of the game. When these two partnered one .another the Battery wero wanting 30 to win, and as they kept stealing run after run, the excitement became great m the pavilion where their comrades and the spectators cheered every run, but luck was against them pulling it off, for Hughes played one to leg where Baymond fielding substitute snapped it up. Baymond, the last man- added 4, and when but 1 to tie and 2 to win were wanted, found Jones too good for him. Jones with 6 wickets for 34, and Godby 4 for 34, bowled well forthe C.V.C. and T.N.A. The fielding was scarcely so good as that of the Battery, Sergt. Lindsay, at raid-off,* disposing of Qooeh with a " galley " catch. On tho C.V.C. and T.N.A. going m again they were not so successful, being dismissed for 58, of which Birrell, with a carefully played 19, and Captain Wright 16, wero tho only scorers to reach doul»lo figures. Sergt. Hughes was very successful with the^ball, securing 7 wickets for 29 runs. It is a pity this match could not bo played out. Appended are the full scores : — C.V.C. and Navals. — Ist Innings.
