CRICKET.

A scratch match took place on the Timaru C.C. Grounds on Saturday between teams chosen by tho Captain and Vice-Captain, the former side going m first. Tho weather being all that could be desired, and tho wicket m first-class order, big scores were anticipated, but as the totals show the bowlers were not to bo denied, and disposed of 24 wickets for tho small score of 116 runs. The bowling was better than m any previous match this season. The Cuptain's side were all out for 52, of which W. W. King with a freely hit 21 claimed premier position ; Smithson with seven wickets for 22 and Perry five for 27 bowling a trifle better than the opposing batemen relished. The Vico-Captain'a eido totalled 64 before the last wicket fell, therefore winning the match by 12 runs, time only allowing of one innings being played. F. W. Smith with 24, not out, was top scorer. He and Smithson (11) were tho only two to offer any resistance to the bowling. Godby with six wickets for 28, and Fhh six for 27 ran one another very close. The former was very difficult to play, at one time sending down six maidens m succession— a very good performance — considering the calibre of some of the opposing batsmen. We are pleased to note that the fielding (the most important part of the game), if not exactly brilliant, was far above the averago, and we hope tbo members of tho Club will continue the satisfactory progress they have displayed m this part of the game.
