A PUPIL TEACHER IN A PAINFUL POSITION.
(By TELKonsprr.) Chbistchubch. Oct: 23. A pupil teacher at the Lower Heathcote ■'chool was brought before the Magistrate's Court to-day, charged with assaulting one of the scholars, a girl eleven years old. It was alleged that m order to attract her attention, accused poked tho child m the ribs with a school pointer. She fainted, and had to be taken home by two other children. The parents sent for a doctor who pronounced that tho child was suffering from inflammation of the lower part of the lung and the liver adjoining apparently consequent upon the injury she received. A second doctor who saw the girl m tho interest of Ihe accused, stated that while he did not see any immediate danger, he considered the case a grave one. It is contended for the defence that the occurrence was a pure accident, and the police do not allege any expressly mulicious action on the pupil teacher's part. Accused was remanded till Thurdeay next, and admitted to bail.
