Lieutennnt Wilfred Powell, the newly»ppointed English Consul for the South Sea Islands, who arrived with his wife and family per the Aorungi, will have charge of all the Islands, with his h end quarters at Samoi. He is proceeding thither by the Janet Nieol. He is instructed to endeavor to cultivate friendly relntions with the German and Atneriam authoritiesand citizens m the Islands, and is entrusted with large and confidential power by the Government, and will travel much jmong the Island*, and report at length to ihu Imperial authorities on nil matters iffecting their present condition and future arospects. Lieutenant Powell is author of ' Wanderings m a Wild Country ; or, Three i'ear? Among the Cannibals of New Britain," laving been there for a numbiT of veun, and made a survey for the Admirnlty of the »a«t9 of New Britain, and having been long xinnected with the Foreign Office. The s.s. Zealandia sailed this afternoon for ?an Francisco. She shipped at Sydney 30 :>oxes of sovereigns valued at £150,000, 4 boxe3 of gold at £24,467 ; and shipped at Auckland from the National Bank gold 210,000, Bank of New Zealand £13,208; total, £230,675. At a meeting of tho Auckland Federated Seamen's Union Mr Dodson, the Dunedin delegnte, stated he had an interview with Captain McGregor re the overtime dispute with the Nor.'hero Steamship Company, but no satisfactory arrangement had jet been arrived at. Wellington, Oct. 13. Mr McEwcn, of the firn. of McEwen, Brown and Kitto, narrowly csonped death through coul gas last evening. Mr McEwen, owing to the arrival of >ome friends, vacated his bedroom m favor of the visitors, and occupied a bed on the sofa m the diningroom. Tins morning at daybreak, Mrs McEwen, intending to meet her mother, who was expected to arrive by the early steamer, went to the dining-room where she found her hnsband lying m a comatose ptuto senseless, and all biit dead. Investigation showed that the top of the gasalkr m tho dining-room had been left open, and hence the cause of what so nearly proved to be a fntelity. The services of a medical man were availed of, and McKwcn was soon restored to consciousness. CnnißTcnußCii, Oct. 13. Post-sessional utterances wore opened lost night by Mr J. I>. lance at Amberley, who avowed himself a supporter of the Government. He received a vote of thanks. BOSBDIF, Oct. 13. Frederick Kressler, chief clerk m the Victorian Insurance Compsny'a ofllee, was charged at. the Police Court to-duy with embezzling £17 of the Company's monay. Other charges are to be brought against him, his defalcations amounting to £500. A verdict of accidental death was returned m the caso of Alexander Kilgour, found dead m a creek at Ashburn Hall Asylum. The father of deceased stated it was nothing unusual for his sod to go on his hands nnd knees to <lrii,k from a creek, nnd it was shown that he was subject to epileptic fits. Gall,,ghor, m which the latier undertook to kr.ock out his opponent m eight rounds, resulted m a win for Williams on the lorenth round.
