An affray took place last night ne.ir Newcastle, between a body of navviei and the police. The situation eventually [ became so serious that the police were compelled to fire upon their assailants, wounding several seriously. The Hon. G. R. Dibbs, Colonial Treasurer, while addressing a public meeting last night, stated that although the Estimates of the Government as regards revenue had not been realised, still it would not bo necessary to impose fresh taxation. The Melbi nrno Manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited, reports on the local market as follows : — Shipping wheat is quieter at 4* to 4? 2d per bushel ; malting barley is very depressed at 3s 6d to 4s 3d ; New Zealand oats, feed sorts, bnd rather more inquiry at rodnced prices, viz., 2« lOd to 3s ; milling is steady at 3a Id to 3s 2d ; New Zealand oats, under bond, 2i Id to 2i 3J. (Received 1 a.m., Oct. 1-lth. I Melbourne, Oct. 13. A meeting of merchants and others interested m the export of wool was held here to-day, and was largely attended. A resolution was passed affirming the d;sirabiliiy <.f tnking immediate action with a view to providing new markets for wool.
