SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT STEEPLECHASES. Tho annual steeplcchaso meeting of tho South Canterbury Hunt Club iB to bo held 10-day on lho Racecourso, Washdyko. Arrangements for tho meeting aro m a very complete ftato, and it promises as usual to be a decided succcs. Tho going, owing to the long spell of fine weather, could not be better, and tlie course is so laid off that the horses will have to bliow both their staying and jumping qualities. The jumps are, with two exceptions, the same as last year. On exception concerns tho park fence and ditch — known to cross-country horsemen as the " fobobrick," as it was so christened by a well-known jockey who came to grief nt it — which has been dono away with, n strong post and rail fence some 3ft. 6in. high with a broad ditch on either side of it having been substituted. The jump is certainly a formidable ono, but it has not such an ugly appearance as its predecessor had. Tho otlier alteration made is the shifting of tho post and rail — tho last fenco but ono from horne — to a difforent ongle, which it is thought thn horses will both approach better, and accordingly negotioto better. From the list of acceptances for the different events, published m our Tuesday's issue, our readers would sco that without a single exception all wero good, and givo proniiso of largo fields. For the Hunt Club Cup cloven have cried content, ond from all wo could learn last evening thero is overy reason to believo that tho lot of them will face the starter to-day. Six aro left m for the Maiden, and of theso moro than two-thirds ore expected to loave tho saddling paddock, whilo for tho Hunters' Flat Roeo eight should be found ot tho starting poat. Among tho horses nro somo strangers, but tho old tried and not found wanting ones aro ngain well to tho fore looking quite ns fit, or moro so, than they did twelve months' ago. The train orrangements for visitors is ns usual very convenient, and as o half-holiday hns been declared, wo anticipate seeing a large ottendonco at the meeting.
