HOUND SHOW.
Tho first rool hound show over held m Now Zealand will toko place at Messrs Maolean and Stewart's rooms, Strathallan streot, Timnru, to-morrow. It gives nil promiso of being n marked succoss, as tho total numbor of ontrics received (39) is even moro than thc spirited originators of tho show anticipated. Tho dogs to be brought into competit.ion will include harriers, beagles, and fox terriers. In tho harrier claßs thero are six entries of stallion hounds j threo for tho best couplo of brood hitcheß, and four for two couplo of working hounds. In beogles there oro threo entries for Btallion hounds, and four for tho best couplo of working hounds. Ten dogs and nino bitches oro entered m tho fox terrier class. It is worthy of mention that the entries oro not confinod to tho [district, but oro mado from variouß parts of North Canterbury ond Otngo. Great intorest is being token m tho exhibition, which thero is overy reason to believe will not only be ono of many to bo held m Timaru, but will causo othors to bo got up m dilTorcnt parts of the colony. The idoa conceivod hero is lo encourage tho importation and breeding of first-class hounds, otc , and direct peoples' nttmit.ion to keeping something olee thnn n bee of mongrels. We mny odd that overy inducement m the way of voluable prizes lias beon offered to get owners of good dogs to send them forward
for exhibition and competition. The whole of these prizes wore on view at Messrs Bower and Ferguson's establishment yesterday, and were most fovorobly commented on. Last evening we had the privilege of minutely inspecting them, und wo must confess the selection committee deserve credit for choosing such beautiful and appropriate articles. For the beat Btallion harrier o massive silver salver is to be given ; for the best couple of brood bitches (harriers) a pair of rusticoted oak silver mounted beakers; for thebest couple of working hounds, a silver butter cooler of unique design and very beautiful workmanship ; for thc best Btallion beagle, a pair of silver-mounted ploiu oak beakers, slightly smaller m size compared with the ones mentioned above, but equally as tastefully finished ; for the best" couple of working beagles, a massive silver tankard, with ebony handle ; for the best fox terrier bitch a silver pocket flask, with patent hinged stopper and concave side which allows of its fitting the breast muoh better thon do flasks of ordinary design. In addition to these prizes is a special one presented by Mr M. J. Godby, consisting of a large sized silver beaker, with o brace of hounds engraved m relief on it. The engraving on all thc prizes is excellent, being done m bold characters, and therefore showing up extremely well. Tho quality of both the silver-mounted and the silver articles is firstclass, and the chasing and ornamentation is of an order as is rarely seen.
