Tho City Council mot to night to consider the proposals to reduce the official salaries 16 per cent, but the meeting was broken up without a formal adjournment, after a lively scene, m which some Councillors made poouliar charges against the Town Clerk. Wellington, July 31. A woman named Acheeson, accompanied by her son, aged 12, went to look for cattle m West Mauriceville Bush on Monday last, and has not since been heard of. A large number of settlers are now out searching. Dpnepik, July 31. S. S. Hutchijon, who has bcon ro-arreated, took the train at Caversham for InvorcargiH, and getting out at Moegicl to sond a telegram, ho had not time to finish it before the train started. The police gave information to one of the bondsmen, who then took proceedings, which resulted m Hutchison's arrest. The screws hove been taken out of the pulleys, stones jammed m the grippe* points, and obstructions .placed on the line, which might have caused a aorious accident if they nad not been discovered. Hutchison was arrested at tho Bluff to-day on suspicion that he was leaving tho jurisdiction of the Court on a charge of fraudulent bankruptcy. ' A ploughman, employed by Charles Dean at Etal Creek, got into his master's bedroom by (he window, on Thursday evening, and severely assaulted him and his wifo by striking them on tho head with a claw hammer. The Police havo gono to arrest the man. The assault was tho roault of a, quarrel, it is alleged. *
