Coal merchants have experienced some diffionlty m obtaining suitable bottoms from Newcastle at current rates during the past winter. About a dozen of the New Zealand coasteri, formerly engaged m tho Greymouth coal trade, have been sold to Queensland merchants dnring the past twelve months at satisfactory prices, and m consequence of their withdrawal, the new steam colliera have had their work cut out to overtake the fast increasing demand for West Coast coal.
