TIMARU SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Timaru Sohool Committee was held m the Board Boom, Main School, last Monday. Members present — Mr John Jackson (Chairman), and Messrs Logott, Jones, Bruce, Stone, and Gibson, MIITtTTES. The minutes of tbo last meeting were read and confirmed. KEPORT3. The following were read and considered : — From the Head Master, Mr Jas. Scott, giving a return of tho number of boys attending the school as follows : — Number on roll, 246 ; average attendance for the month, 211 j highest, 222. 'From the Mistress, Mrs M. G. Grahame, reporting that tho number of girls on tbe roll is 272 j^ highest attendance, 216; average daily ditto, 200 7. The cold weather bad been the cauro of a marked falling off m the 'attendance, particularly m junior classes. The Mis f ,ress found on enquiry that the children were Buffering from cold, and were, therefore, unable to attend. From the Inf »nt Mistress, Miss L. Kipponberger, stating that since the reopening of the school the averages attendance hnd been 285.9 ; highest attendance, 348 ; and roll number, 467. The daily attendance had been considerably affected by tbe weitber, and the Mistress found from enquires made among the parents, that a number of the children were suffering from -whooping cough, etc. Bhe also informed the Committee that a few loada of gravel were much needed around the Infant Schoolroom (particularly on the boys' side), as tho ground was very slippery m wet weather, and children were apt to fall down. Prom the Mistress of the Side Bchool, forwarding return of that fcliool for the month ended August 3rd, as follows :— Number on roll — girjs 90, boys 80, total 170; averaee attendance, 106 6 ; highest attendance, 124. The Mistress also reported that sickness had boen prevalent among the children, and that the attendance had been affected thereby. Some miQOr matters mentioned m the above reports were left to tho Chairman to deal with. TUB TEACHING STAFF. A letter was read from the Secretary to the South Canterbury Board of Education, acknowledging receipt of Committee s resolution re appointment of teacher?. In accordance with the resolution Miss Peters had been appointed a pupil teacher of the first year ; Miss Webb as a pupil teacher of the jecond year, and Mr Cuthbert as ninth teacher. Tbe appointments to dato from August Ist. Eight applications were received for tbo poet of Assistant Mistress, rsodered vacant by the resifination of Mips Gillon. After due consideration, the Committee decided to recommend Miss M. Kiesell, of Patea, to the Board as Assistant Mistress to the Main School. VISITOB3. The Visitors reported that all the schools were working satisfactorily ; and that tbe repairs to the infant and other rooms bad besn executed m a very creditable manner. Messrs Jonoa and Lepgott were appointed Visitors to the Main School forthe ensuing month ; and Messrs Bruce and Stone to the Side School. CTWAHCrAL. The sum of £44 Is lOd was received from the Board of Education on aocount of incidental expemes; also, £1 14s 3d from the Heftd Master for the same fund. Accounts amounting to £14 10s Id were passed for : payment, and tho meeting terminated.
