[Beess Association Teleqeak.] j WELLINGTON J.C. SPRING MEETING, j Wellington, Not. 80. The Wellington Spring Meeting took place „ to-day on tho Hult courts, which was m splendid order. Tlie weather was fine, tho heat heing tempered bj a good breeze. Ex- Cl oellont fields contested the various oventf, and jj tho racing wasifnirly interesting although it „ was apparent that one or two candidate* were oiitjfor an airing. The attendance numbered about 1000, many being prevented from going £ by the Mayoral election m town. No games of chance were permitted on the course, and ?' the inUrfal between the races wsa con■equently very alow, but the drinking booths - did a good bueinois. It being reported that j~ the police intended to stop all sweeps, much 2 intorest wai evinced. Tbe people were not * long m mspeme, as Detective Chrystall look the names of nine perioni who were taking /* part m five shilling sweeps on the first race, , and expressed his intention to do the same m allcoies. Some gentlemen were very indignant " at the detective looking over their shoulders _ at what they were writing m a memo book X and one officer wai throatened with a slap m \ the face if ho repeated his conduct. The publio made a determined stand against police interference with sweeps, while tho totalieatori «, and bookmakers were not interfered with. To ~ afford a test case the stowards, including Sir William Fitzlierbert and (he Hon. J. Martin drew a sweep m the presence of the detectives who were invited to witness it.
