These additions were to have been of wood,- but before much progress had been made the morning papers spoke out strongly against the completion of the work, on the ground that the Act prohibited the erection of wooden buildings, except under special conditions, within a prescribed area. Public feeling ran rather high on the matter, it being generally considered that an insult was being offered to the town by the Government m the erection of such paltry buildings as public offices.
