Sooth Canterbury Athletic Club. — At a meeting of members of the above club yesterday, at the Royal Hotel, twenty-five new men were elected. The Club now consists of about eighty members. The Marquis of Lornk. — This horse was sold yesterday on the show grounds, by Messrs Stubbs and Co., fetching £300, the purchaser being Mr J. Cramond. Tisiaru Races. — A few gentlemen, interested m sporting matters, met yesterday m Timaru, to take initiatory steps re Timaru races, 1573, About £30 was subscribed m the room, and the meeting adjourned till some time m November. Mr T. G. Cork was appointed Secretary and Treasurer. Murray's Circus. — The company were to have performed on the show night, and would undoubtedly have had a bumper house, but owing to a gale of wind and rain coining on, tliey were obliged to lower the marquSe, and abandon the idea of performing. They gave two performances yesterday, and tonight will appear at Temuka. Cruel. — A bailiff at Charleston, on the West Coast, lately inflicted upon a young gallant m that plase the bitter mortification of being served with a Buminonß for debt while walking with his sweetheart. Candid. — In commenting on the arrangements (which were then iv progress) for the formation of the present Ministry, the Wellington Independent made the following candid avowal :— " The great object to be kept m view is to sufficiently fill the Government benches, so as to enable the business to be proceeded with rapidly." FLiX stick Canoe 3. — The Chatham Islands correspondent of the. Southern Gross contributes the following interesting item : — " The Morioris of Oweuga are now completing three colare or flax stem canoes, such as were used by their ancestors m very ancient days.They' are most artistically put together, would stand heavy seas, and are objects of of very great curiosity. These canoes have been ordered by a scientific gentleman from New Zealand, who has recently been pursuing his researches m the Chatham Islauds." Volunteer Bazaar.— A fancy bazaar was held m the Oddfellows' Hall, on Wednesday and yesterday, m aid of a fund for the erection of a "Volunteer hall and drill shed. The Volunteer band played outside the hall on both evenings. There were six fancy goods stalls, presided over as follows : — No. 1, by Mrs H. Green and Miss Beswick ; No. 2, Misses ■■ Melton and Weaver ; No. 3, (Cadets), Mrs Youngbusband j No. 4, (bachelors), Miss Green; No. 5, Megdames Levien and Duff ; No. 6, Mrs F. J. Wilson and Miss Parsoh3. The 'post-office was kept by Miss Griffin ; the flower stand, by Miss Cramond ; and the refreshment stall, by Mrs Beldy ' and Miss Wood. About £78 was realized the first night. . The articles unsold last night were submitted at auction ; and judging by the crowd of people thnt attended then, a good round sum must have been taken. Tiie Fire at Eeid akd Gray's Foundry. The Otago Daily Times' of Saturday stiys : — A fire broke out at Messrs Reid and Gray's plough factory, at Onmaru, on Friday morning early. The origin is" not fully known, but is supposed to have ;arisen m some way from lighting the engiuo-fire m the morning, first thing. The loss is a very serious one to Messrs Reid and' Gray, who have 'shown great enterprise m- manufacturing ploughs and reapers. ■■ There was very little wind at the time, or the adjoining buildings, though of ston.o, might hare beon greatly injured. The lathes and tools are all either partially twisted and spoiled by the action of the fire. Energetic efforts are being made by: Messrs Reid and Gray to. resume business at an .early • date; and to complete orders m hand. Great sympathy will bo felt for them m the town nnd; district, as their losses will amount to .about £3000, and they are, unfortunately, ontirely uninsured,' owing to a policy not being renewed when it expired' a fortnight previously.
