THE SALTWATER CREEK STEEPLECHASE.

[from an outsider.] I am clad to see by the entries for the Saltwater Creek Annual Steeplechase, that this year it bids fair to excel any previous meeting on the same course. After the great losses we had by lire, aud the general depression throughout the district, it was thought that if we had our Animal Meeting, it would be as much us we could expect from the sporting community ; but the liberal inanuer m which they have a>;am come forward, shows that when once a thing is started m the district, it will never be allowed to fall through. On looking at the entries, the first come to is " Doucaster," a five-year-old colt, entered by Mr Dyson. As he has never performed m public before, of course I can give no opinion as to his capabilities across country, but he is thought to be a good jumper, with a fair turn of speed. The next on the list is Mr Pilbrow's "Tommy," aged. The old horse has often run, and one thing must be admitted, that if he did not always win, he always did his best. The same thing may De said of " Pasha," entered by Mr A. Cardale, seven years. I would have picked this horse as the winner, but at present he is far too fat. and appears not to have been more than a week or ten days off grass, making his chance for this year rather a bad one. Mr Dowding's " Deerfoot," and Mr Orbell's •• Hard limes," are good jumpers, but both are too slow to win, Mr Orbell's horse being quite as unfit m point of condition %b " Pacha," but having a great advantage over him m being a much younger horse. The last on the list is Mr J. Spiuk's "Trump," aged, and from his previous performances I should say that, bar accidents, he will carry away the stakes ; but should he make a mistake, "Hard Times" (with Mr Orbell up) will not be the last to meet the judge's ' eye.
