FIRST GOVERNMENT OF SOUTHLAND.
The energy of the new Government was shown from the beginning m its vigorous public works so much required. Roads surveyed and opened up, through difficult and heavily timbered districts far into the interior, rivers bridged or made fordable all over the country ; immigration from Britain to the new Province set m motion* schools built, and a public system of education established; and the general interests of the young settlement, for the first time m its history, were found to be closely and judiciously cared for. Such were the true and tangible results of the .establishment of local self-government m Southland.
