Police-Constable Assaulted by Roughs.
Auckland, December 30. A moat disgraceful scene occurred ta Short land-street late oa Tuesday s night when police-constable Michael ■ Mitchell was severely bandied by a jy ewwd ef roughs. Aa altercation was : proceeding between some cabmen, whose hansoms were standing on the aak at the bottom of Shortland-street, #wfaae Constable Mitchell appeared on ; the Rene, and hearing most disgusting language being used, ordered the men ' • teoesut. Instead of doing as they wen bidden, the men turned on the 1 waitable, and threatened him in in- * deeMt language. Mitchell thereupon * caught hold of one of the men and endeavoured to effect his arrest, but the other*, reinforced by several who quickly arrived outhesceoe, obstructed too constable, and saying that he had got hold of the wrong man, expressed their determination of preventing his arrest, and in the struggle that ensued the prisoner managed to escape from the constable’s grasp. About fifty roughs took part in the affair, Detective Maidem and Actingdetective Kennedy subsequently succeeded in arreeting Robert Caeey, who at yesterday's sitting of the Police : Court wan charged with using obscene language and assaulting Constable 1 Mitchell while the latter was in the ' execution of his duty. Sergeant ' dark characterised the case as being ! the wont that had ever come before *: tins Court.
