Aliened Startling Occurrence.
[B!f TELEGRAPH.—OWN COBnESPONDEST.J Auokund, January 21.. A somewhat startling occurrence is reported to have taken place atPaeroa yesterday afternoon. It is alleged that a man named Thomas, Carroll while shaking hands with a gentleman named 'Robert Jewell drew a bottle of acid from his pocket and,threw the contents over Jewell's face and clothes. The latter was badly burnt about the face, and largo holes were burnt in his clothes. The culprit, it is said, then loft for Auckland. Constable Beatty arrived from Paeroa this afternoon, and an information was laid ■ against Thomas Carroll in connection with' the occurrence and a warrant issued for hiß arrest. J '
