The Mayoral Election.

The result of the poll was known at about 6.45, the votes obtained by the candidates being Radford 269, Trembath 192, Mr Radford having therea fore ft majority of 77. II Mr Radford in thanking the ratem payers for their renewed expression of confidence said he had not intended to again offer his services but he was pressed to do so and had acquiesced in his friends' request. However had apyone come forward honestly, even at the last moment lie would have retired iR his favor. When he saw some dirty, underhand work going on he determined to go to the poll and the result was the ratepayers had returned him with a good majority for which he heartily thanked them. Mr Trembath also made a few remarks, and said that lie thought Mr I Radford having beaten him would ' have confined himself to the graceful words of thanks. He had thought fit to make mention of underhand work, but there h'ad been nothing of the kind, and in caning forward he was asserting the principle that ono man should not have a monopoly of an office which may be held by any ratepayer having tlio confidence of his fellows. Had he been elected he would have done his best for all, and served the Borough faithfully as he jlttd done during the period lie acted

as Councillor. Ho thanked those who voted for him, and if at any tinio in the future lie could servo them in n public capacity he would be pleas"! to do so, ■
