MINING NEWS.

PUKU CONSOLIDATED. The work of development is Btoadily advancing in this mine, and iho results nttending tho same aro of most gratifying character. The riso upon tlic upsttike of tho Rimu reef from tho No 2 level to thf> No 1 ia now well under way. The reef here hears a very promising appearance, and at each breaking down gold can be freely seen diitributed through tho full width ofihe quartz body. Tbc advanccmout of tho No 2 and low lovel upon the south course of tho reef conlii.ucs to entor upon a superior class o' country to that passed through at the same point' overhead at No 1 level, Tho practical tests made from tho reef at this | level, and tho splondid results obtained lcavo no tooin to doubt tho genuine character of tho lode, and it, is only n matter of time, when it will raukc itself prominent as a gold producer of considerable importance, ike woiks inhund at the No 1 level upon tho south courso of the same lode, is also responsible for good results. The drivo upon the course of the Chairman's reef arc being actively carried on, but there is no change to re* cord. ■'MANCHESTER,

This mine is peg and peg with the May Queen Extended on ita eastern boundary operations. Tlio chief point 'of development will bo directed to the extension of tho present low levol, which has already been driven a considerable distance in a southeasterly direction for the Hnloyon main reof, at a considortble depth be'ow all previous workings. Some timo ago Messrs Smith and parly who owned and worked this mine, sunk a winze upon the reof from ft higher level. From this they ob ained a payable class of ciushing material which yielded from l-Jozs to 3ozs to the load. The work of sinking was carried on'to a.considerable depth bat had to be abandoned owing to tho influx of .water being more than they could doat with. Sinco then nothing whatever has been done upon the reef. Now the low level will bo driven ahead 100 feet where it is anticipated tho reef will be intersected. Two hundred fo»t of further driving upon the course of the reof will advance the work under* ncath the point where the winze was sunk, This levol will thoroughly ex* plore this section of tho mine, and is at the present, entering a Bplendid class of oouncry.

VICTORIA, The Manager reports" Tho work of clearing out and repairing tho No. 4 level has been continued during tho week with bat little chango from my last. Driving has been temporarily suspended at No. 3 level, and a connection ha 9 been offccted with the winze being sunk from No, 2 level, At this latter lotol tlioro is no material chango to mention, Tho quartz coming to hand shows gold freely, and appears to be improving in quality as the slopes progress upwards, In the winze the loader is small though producing a little picked stono occasionally. At No, 1 level, tho leader on the wostorn stopes is still continuing to show gold freoly at each brooking down, and a small parcel of picked stone is frequently secured. In tho eastern stopes above No. 1 level the leader is also improving, moro gold being scon than usual. I havo driven an intermediate level from these stopes to endeavour to pick up the eastern continuation of the reef beyond the No. 1 slide. The leader was intersected during the week, and proved to be a solid body of quartz about 2 feit in thickness. Although no gold has been seen in it up to the presont the quartz looks vory promising, and as good ore was won from this portion of the reef on the surfaco level this block should bo a remunerative one.—J. H. Agnew,"
