Imperial Zollverein.

The Congress of the Chambers of Commerce approved of the appointment of a Consultative Imperial Council consisting of members resident in Great Britain. Mr John Henry, Ex-Colonial Treasurer of Tasmania, declared that without customs duties Australia would be unable to meet her obligations. Mr Asquith, speaking at Reading, said that except in regard to tha defences, formal connection wifcn the colonies was the best safeguard of the permanent unity of the Eraphe, The ftollverein was not a solid principle, and would prove unworkable in practise. The British workers would not tolerate a scheme which wouid hamper trade for the sake of an imaginary expansion of friendship. Memjournk, June 12.
Referring to Mr Chamberlain's advocacy of the Zollerein, the Premier says the Government would not accept such it proposal as it would be injurious to local manufacturers. Differential duties they might consider but not ab. solute free trade.
