THE Thames Advertiser Favour to none; fear of none; justice to all SATURDAY, APRIL 14,1891.
We understand that several-local minors purposo leaving fiorc next week for thff Mure won nrid Coolgardie goldfields of A iv ii, It is an old saying "far off fields are green," but a correspondent who writes from Murchison, draws a very dark pioture of life in the west. The gold is thero, ho says, and in mnnv instances is proved bovond doubt to be more than payable. But life in mad" a bunion and a tormont for lack of water, and to thoso who aro not well provided and able to pursue a barron quest for months together, a thing of precarious tenure. Many of the promising Murchison claims are held by men who have lictlo capital, ond can employ only onough labour to comply with tlio law. Thero is littlo work outside that which mon can provide for them* selves by prospecting, and littlo prospeot of raoro for a long time to como, while provisions aro dear and nasty. And prospecting is a torriblo danger to anyono who goes far afield. One case is montipned of a man who became insano through thirst and cut his throat; another of ono whoso skeleton was found I sittiug against a rook, within a few hundred yards ol the saving water he was destined never to reach.' Many such tragedies as these happon and may never bo known, but the writor tells of somothing hardly loss tragic which occurred in the full glare of publicity. A thirsty man, and ono with uo prejudice against intoxicants, washing out a littlo stuff with two bottles or good beor, should bo a potcut warning against Murohison until some kind of pormauout water supply has boen secured.
