THE PRICE OF BREAD.

(ro the Editor.)

Sir,—lt is an opon secret that there is a combination among the bakers of the Thames to keep the price of bread at its present exorbitant figure. In ail tho principal towns through the colony it is selling at 4$ to 5d per 41b loaf. In Auckland I know that good bread can be bought for cash at 2|d the 21b loaf. There cannot be any sufficient reason why it Bhould be 4d here, and I am surprised at the public submitting so quietly to be fleeced as they now ore. I consider the price moßt outrageous, and the sooner consumers take steps to bring the bakers to their senses, the better, I would suggest tint a number of the public bind themselves to take broad from some baker who will start and sell a good quality—at say halfpenny per 21b loaf, in advance of the Auckland price. This would be at present 3d for cash, and 3|d booked, and taking the price of flour into consideration, should pay well, In most other branches of business here pricos seem reasonable, and I find tho bakers have had a good innings at our expense; Now thoy should givo way with a good graco - if not, let us make them, Give them say ono week to consider, and should they not by that time havo made a sufficient reduction, then with your oormission Mr Editor, all thone who are dissatisfied and will full in with my suggoslions could give in their names at your office, und a bakor will soon bo found who will break tho '"oirn-jr" in the staff of life. Wo know that this is an age of •' trusts" monopolies and combinations of the fow to en.ich thomPolveß at the oxpenso of the nitmy We in this young country aro imitatiaj' tho older ones. Havo wo not our timber combination who have raised the prico of timber some 2 or 3b per 100 ? I seo ac cording to tho pnrsrs have advanced sugar • HoraeiGp s 'ton v.f hinafew weeks. So that thoro are alrcudy throo which ' ovoiybody must uso increased onormously ' imprico through these unholy cembina- ' tione, and all this tonds to ox'./act tho < hard oarnod monoy from the masses to make a few rich.—l am, etc., 1 Another Burdened Parent
