Wellington, Wednesday. The cable steamer ' A gnes' returned after performing the best portion of her task, having laid thirty-seven miles of cable. She will now have to await tho arrival of the seven and a half miles more necessary to complete the work. No advices have been received that the seven and a half miles have been sent out, but it'is expected to be here by the end of December. Tho following tenders have been received at the Public Works Office:— Patea and Manawatu railway, 8,700 sleepers; Accepted, Eiohter Nannensteed, Palmerston North, Ids 4d each; Eees, Palmerston North, Is Bd, do at Is lOd if notched; Morgan and Bobinson, Wellington, Is 9d; Manson and Bartholomew, Palmerston North, 2s 6d.—Waitara and Wanganui, 20,000 sleepers. Accepted, Broadmore and Co., New Plymouth, at 23 each; declined, O'Sullivan, Havelock, 2$ (he did not comply with the conditions) ; Henry Brown, New Plymouth, 2s 9d; Brogden and Sons, 3s 3d; Kensington Bros., Auckland, 3s sd; Eichter and Co., 3s [sd; Brogden and Sons, 3s S^d; Eeid, Palmerston North, 3s s|d; Bichter and Co., 3s 7d; Malcolm and Co., 3s 9d; Waller and Garlick, 3s 9d; Bandolph arid Walker, Palmerston North, 3s lOd; Suelson, 3s i Christchukch, Wednesday.

Maiden Plate, of 100 sovs, added to a sweep of 10 sovs, weight for age, 1| miles: Webb's Middleton, 1; Fallacy, 2; Fanny Fisher colt, 3. Titania and Lady of the Lake also ran. Marora and Wrangler were scratched. Betting: 3to 2 against Fanny Fisher colt and Fallacy, 3to 1 against Lady of the Lake; 4 to 1 against Middleton. Middleton' and Fallacy made the running, the colt soon went up, Titania and Lady of the Lake tailing off; the colt and Middleton led for a mile, the former then fell back, and Fallacy went up splendid, and finished by. Middleton winning by a short neck. OanterburyCup, 250 sovs, added to sweepstakes 15 sovs, 2| miles: Guy Fawkes, 9st 61b, 1; Danebury, 7st 21b, 2,• Cloth of Gold, Bst 121b, 3. Pungawerewere, Dead Heat, and Songster also ran. Templeton, Ariel, Fanny Fisher colt, and Fallacy were scratched.' Betting: Even on Guy, 3 to 2 against Danebury, 3 to 1 against Songster, sto 1 against others. Punga cut out the running, Danebury second, Cloth of Gold third, Guy Fawkes fourth, Dead Heat bolted off the course, and was out of the race at the end of the mile; .Danebury went to Pungawerewere; Guy passed Cloth of Gold; the rest tailing off. Danebury and Punga led to the bottom turn, when Guy improved his position rapidly. On entering the straight Punga fell back, beaten. Guy and Danebury came away together, causing a magnificent race home, : Guy winning by a short length, Cloth, of Gold a very bad third. Time, 4 mins. 16£ sees. Publicans' Purse. Handicap, mile: Isaac Walton, 9st 61b, 1; Mangle, 7st 61b, 2; Wrangler, 7st 61b, B.' Black Pine, Fishhook, and Folle Farine also ran. Tadmor, Songster, and Amohia were scratched. Betting: 6to 4 against Fishhook, sto 1 against Wrangler, and 5 to 1 against the others. Isaac Walton and Mangle got beat off, but made a very bad start, Fishhook being left on the post. The first two ran together all the way. Isaac Walton won by a length and a-half. Time, lmin. 13£secs. Trades-' man's Handicap, 100 sovs, 1 mile: Tadmor, 1; Pungawerewere, 2;. Hob Eoy, 3. A public meeting was held here, at which it was decided to start a company to lay the tramway from Greymouth to Kumara. A flying survey has been made, and tho distance is found to be fourteen miles, over a level country, as against twenty-two miles, tho present road, which is hilly. The capital of the company is £5,000, and an offer has been already made to construct the tram for j)er mile. An offer has also been made to lease the tram for five years at £1,000 perannum. He advised an appeal to the Imperial Parliament. In conclusion, he stated, as showing lie had no personal ends to serve, " I pledge my word that the day Otago hoists her own flag I shall retire into private life." Auckland has determined to contest at the Fire Brigade demonstration. • i Last night the Synod resolved to request; that the Synod may be moved to adopt as tho future name or litlo of Oliristchurch that,suggested by Sir Wm. Martin, viz.. "The English Church of New Zealand." The Town Clerk's salary is raised to £600. ' The City Council only determined that the Mayor should represent it at the convention. The Hon.
