TAIRUA.
(FBOIE OUB OWN COBBESrONDENT.)
Nevesville, Wednesday.. The prospectors', as stated in' my Saturday's letter, wero timbering up that portion of the shaft from whence they .are obtaining the good dirt, This was completed sometime on Monday, and yesterday about a ton of good crushing stuff was sent to the surface. Sluicing the cap of No. 2 reef was also in operation for about three hours, and there is now uncovered the outcrop of a gigantic body of; stone, showing gold in many places. After the aboVe sluicim? operation, ono of the boxes was cleaned out, and ono dish of the headings, whefi panned off, yielded fully half an ounce of fine gold. Tho whole of tho contains gold of this description, but it is difficult to wort, inasmuch as there is not sufficient water for hydraulic purposes, which would bo the most efficient mode of removing the soil. Greater, progress is being made with the battery than I anticipated, fls more sawyers are at work, and the fluming, which it was thought .would bo a source of delay, is now in hand, and the trestlework in course of erection.
The Independent (tympany are.'now in with the western drive from the shaft fully 70 feet, and again there is a change of country, which is much harder than heretofore. Tho tunnel from the eastern
sideling is in 80 feet, and has fully 200 feet to go ore it break's into the, shaft. Seeing that tho west drive from the shaft has cut nothing of importance beyond tho. small vein, which gives "good prospepts, it is evident that the prospectors' lodes are between.tho present'"faco of tho tunnel and the shaft, so that a little patience will have to be exercised by the shareholders until the tunnel gets further ahead. With regard to. tho mullocky vein in the western drive, the prospects are so good from it that tho manager is of opiuion that it has somo connection'with a lode, and it is his intention shortly to sink upon it to ascertain the. strength below the present shallow level.
' There is« nothing of importance from the Britannia Company's ground, the manager reporting that he has had somo very heavy work in cutting down a faco for the site of tho tunnel. Ho has, however, overcome tho difficulty, and has entered his drive for a distanco of seven feet.
