TAIRUA.

(FROM OUB OWN COBBE3PONDENT.) Nevesville, Wednesday morning. The prospectors still continue to get good crushing stono from tho main shaft, and have now pierced through to the hanging, wall on tho west side, the wall being very well defined and smooth. There are fully eight tons of good stuff bagged from the shaft. The contractor with his bullocks for conveying the quartz has arrived on tho ground, and will' commence to mako a track.

Tho Brothers commence operations again to-day under a limited company, and the first work will be to push ahead the tunnel which cuts the reef in about 20 feet. .

Several capitalists are expected up this week to examine tho Brothers locality, which, if favourable, will probably arrange to erect machinery.

Mr McLaren is now laying off a maiu street in Nevesville. Many whares will have to be removed.

Captain Goldsmith is going tbo round of tho mines, and is very wrath with the companies in not employing more men. It is probablo that re-entry will bo mado without more men aro at onco employed. . The new track behind MoLery's is tho decided upon by Mr McLaren for the main road. This finds general favour with tho public, as tho gradients aro so .much easier than past Bowley's.

. Thursday morning. As intimated in yesterday's brief letter the Mining Inspector was at work visiting tho various mines, and the result will be that several companies will receive intimation that a stronger force must be employed. Several of tho water rights have also received attention, so that when the day of hearing comes off the applications will bo disposed of. Mr McLaren has laid off a main street, and as this isdifferent to what was expected, it is likely to cause a little trouble. Most of tho storekeepers struck off a line for themselves, and erected stores thereon, taking up 66 x ,132 feet. They now find that the street laid off by the Government Engineer is at the back of their allotments, and in most instances has left them out in tho cold. They now claim to have the first choice of bllotments, but those who have pegged out to-day object on tho ground that they (the storekeepers) pegged out like miners for a certain line of reef, and now they find they are off the line, and consequently _ want to move the pegs. As the sito for the proposed township is very limited, the area of 66 x 182, granted by the regulations, cannot accommodate all, and is therefore proposed to have them 33 x 66, which would then give every one a show. A small reserve for tho Government offices will be made on the silo of the old camp, with a frontage to the street, laid off to-day. In Stewart's lease, operations, in the sbapo of fencing,, are being carried on, and tho manager reports that from tho line of the Triangle and Puketui reef (which is ono and tho same), it ought to be secured within a couple of days from this.

Tho Triangle tunnel is now in fully 30 feet, and, with 10 feet more driving, tho leader at tho bottom of the shaft ought to be intersected. If th'elodois more compact than in the shaft with the same show of gold, then-the company aro in possession of a good payable lode. The National tunnel is now in 60 feet, and the last few feet have shown a slide to make across the drive On the face of the slide there is a layer of blue and white quartz, which pounds up very well indeed. It is intended to sink upon the numerous veins of quartz that were passed through at the mouth of the tunnel, as the manager is of opinion that they have some connection with tho main lode.

TheAjax Company's men are at pre-, sent engaged in marking out tho line of of their water-race and dam sito, and when these are completed the manager will start to break out,a ton of quartz from the face of the tunnel, which will then be forwarded to Shortlaud for reduction. As to tho quality of the lodo there can be no question as to its payableness, and I feel convinced that from H to 2ozs per ton nan be safelyrelied upon. The other day I spoke of the erection of a battery on one of tho water rights now applied for, and I do not think there is any breach of confidence in stating that a battery of 13 stampers will shortly be on its route, which will be erected on Daykin's right.
