MINING MATTERS.

Twelfth of July.—l small parcel of gold weighing llozs 17dwts, the result of a crushing from the above claim, was lodged at the National Bank yesterday, and melted;to a bar. weighing llozs lidwts 18grs. Tho yield was very poor, for thero woro about 70 tons reduced for that result.

Una,—lt appears that tlio winze whioli has been started from the uppor levol of tjie Una mine, to meet aud ventilate the nevr level, is not going down on the main reef at all, but is carrying with it a footwall vein of some six or eight inches in width. It is perhaps just as well that it should be as it is, for thero is such a quantity of water in the lodo, and in all probability, if the contractors had started sinking on it, they would have been materiaUy impeded, if not stopped altogether. Thero is nothing fresh from tho lovel itself. Thoro is no gold showing in tho lodo at present, but tho drive is now going through a blank portion of the reef which lies between the two shots of gold, the second of which has yet to be reached. Meanwhile good progress is being mado with the construction of the tramway connecting the mouth of tho tunnel with tho company's battery.

Moanataiaiii Batieby.—This company's mill iias been undergoing some repairs this week, including au ovorhaul of the ©Dgiuo,. and it will not bo started to work until to-day. - The crushing for the Monarch and one or two other smill parcels were delayed by the stoppage, but the former will bo finished in a fow hours after starting, The battery will bo employed as usual, the larger force of 25 head crushing stuff from tho company's mino, 5 head for the Long Drive, and tho remaining .10 head on oilier parcels; Cube.—Anothor nice parcel of oOlbs of picked stone, and 5 or 61bs of rich specimens cpme to hand yesterday from'tho sme stope on No, 5 reef from whioh the rich stone was taken on tho, preceding day, and there. is still a good rich show left, This stopo is close to the junction of tho foot-wall leader with the main lode, and it is evident that this has something to do with tho superior richnoss of tho particular seotion fiom which tho specimens are being obtained. I?ed White and Blue,—A crushing for Long and party, tributors of No. 2 section o£ the Ked White and Blue mine, which has been going on at tho Moanataiari battery, would liavo been finished before now only for tho stoppage 'which has taken place. It will, however, bo completed this week, and tho result, although not rich, is likely to prove a payable one.

Dauntless and Sink-to-Eise. — A small crushing for Sykes and party, tributors of No. 4 section of tho above mine, is now going on, and will be finished this week. There are some specimons to try beforo tho cleaning up takes place, and tho yield will be a good payable one. Tookey—Morgan's Teibuie,—Morgan and party, who have taken a seotion of the Tookey mino at tho 200-feot level on tribute, are now having a parcel of stone crushed at tho Prince Alfred battery. It will be finished to-day, but although a little gold was' seen while tho stone was being broken out, tho roturn is not likely to prove much more than payable.

Golden Oalf.—Crushing for this company is progressing steadily at the Herald battery with 20 head of stampers, and at the Prince Alfred battery with 12 head, and the show at both mills is satisfactory, ia fact, quite equal to that made at any time during the reoent crushing. In the mine also the general appearance of the lode is highly satisfactory.' Gold shows through the stono as freely as usual, and there i 3 no diininytion in the size of the reef, and although the ventilation is imperfect at present, pending the communication with the Otago workings, towards which a cross-cut is being driven, there is no difficulty experienced so far in keeping up an adequate supply of quartz for tho Urge crusfihg force now employed. . West Coast Tbibutb. — Weatherall and party, for whom an extensive crushing was recently completed, cro again accumulating quartz in the paddock, and will resume crushing on Monday week. By 'that time, if the lode maintains its size, there will be from 80 to 100 tons on hand, and while the crushing is going on stuff will be coming to hand, so that when completed the quantity reduced will be considerable. The show in tho stone now in paddock is quite equal to that comprising the recent crushing. The tributcrs, while waiting the completion of the Waiotahi road, made good use of their lime, and opened their section to such advantage that they are now able to pbtrn quartz rapidly and cheaply. Queen of the May.—The crushing is making quite as good a show now, as it did during tho past fortnight and should it continue to yield as well during the remrinder of this week as it has done, there will be as good a return, from Monday's retorting as the last oue. The manager has started fo drivo on the foot-wall reef at the 270-feet level, that is, tho level above the main one and the lode, is a fine compact one fully a foot thick, and is composed of nice quartz. Should tho lode prove as rich in this level as the deep one, the manager will bo in a better position for keeping up the supply of quartz for the crushing mill.
