MINING MATTERS.
Ceown Princess.—Tho roturn from this company's cruslvng, as wo predicted, proved a very handsomo remuneraiivo ono. Uctorting look plnco on Saturday evening after 149 tons of stuff had been put through for the company at the Bright Smiio old battery, and llio yield amounted to the very handsomo total of 2(ioozs gold. Crushing will be suspended for a short time until stuff accumulates to givo a fair start again. The crushing® for tho company during tho last three months liavo been of a good rich character, and liavo materially improved the position of tho company by reducing their debt, and as there aro strong evidences of tlio gold going downward, it will not bo long before tho directors will find themselves free from liability, but probably ablo to pay dividends.
MoiNATA.UBi.-Tho usual fortnightly retorting for tho Moauataiari Company took place oil Saturday, and tho yield, as wo anticipated, proved very much richer than that of tho preceding fortnight, or indeed than any that has been obtained for somo tirno past, and was, in fact, a payablo return, which left a good profit. There wore 6GO tons of stuff crushed, and the return obtained was 3250zs lOdwts, or au average of nearly half an ounco to the ton. The improvement is iu great measuro duo to tho largo_ reef, Hcldt's reef as it is called, which is being worked at tho main level. Tho course of this reef has now been followed a length of 100 feet, and there still remains about 250 feet of its length to follow to tho boundary. It is soven feet, aud therefore supplies a largo amount of crushing stuff, and it has, so far, proved to bo good payable quality, although not rich. Thcro is sometimes a little gold showing in tho stone, and it is quite possible that when the rest of it is opened up somo rich runs may bo discovered in it which will further improvo the position of tho company. Another important work which tho manager is now proseculingis the opening up of a crosscut from the old winding-shaft at tho 70feet level. This will go right through the old stopes opened by Captain Higgius, from which tho gold was obtained which paid the dividends, It is expected that somo good rich branch leaders will be found. At all events, there was a quantity of stuff which_ was then left as unpayable, but which, under existing circumstances, with the present facilities for working, and cheap crushing at the compauy's own powerful mill, will have a handsome profit.
Caledonian.-Morling for the Caledonian Company took place cn Saturday afternoon at tho Prince Alfred battery, after a broken crushing, which extended over a considerable period, but there were only five head of stampers employed, and and the total quantity reduced was only 150 tons. 1 his, as wo previously explained, was obtained from workings around tho engine-shaft, and from tiio small leader which was opened near the bottom of the No. 3 shaft. There was also a portion of it from another lodo in the neighbourhood of the Hazelbank shaft, so that tho crushing might fairly bo termed a mixed lot. The yield was a splendid one, amounting to 37Gozs, or an average of 2ozs lOdwls 3grs to tho ton.
