PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTION.—DECLARATION OF THE POLL.

The declaration of the poll for a member of the Provincial Council for the Thames in the room of the late Mr Swan, took, place at the Court-house, Shortland, yesterday. There were but a few persons present,' and only the successful candidate, Mr Davies* Captain Fraser, Returning Officer, read, out the numbers, and stated that sin'c?§|?e numbers were published on the day of the poll, two votes had been taken from Mr I<owe, one from Booth No. 3at Shortland, and one at Tapu, thus leaving the numbers-MrDavies, 584; Mr Bowe, 629—thus leaving Mr Davies a majority of 65. Captain Fraser then' made the usual declaration, that Mr W. Davies had been duly elected to represent the Thames in the Provincial Council of Auckland. Mr Davies said he had to return the electors.of the Thames his sincere and heartfelt thanks for the proud position in ■which they had placed him. Be thanked the 584 electors who had voted for him, while he recognised that svery man had a perfect right to use bis own judgment. He would endeavour to convince t.hose who had voted against him, and to obtain their confidence and esteem. He would endeavour, as far as lay in his power, to work with the other representatives of the Thames to obtain every advantage they could for the district. He had not come forward for any particular purpose, nor from personal ambition. His sole am- ■ bilion was to do good for (ho Thames. He thanked them' again for the high Position in which they had placed him, n conclusion he would beg to propose a rote ot thanks to Captain Fraser, the Returning Officer, and, as Mr liowo was , . not present, he would ask some one to second the motion. _ Mr A. Hart seconded the motion. " Captain Fraser roturned thanks, remarking that now the election had ended he hoped the candidates and their supporters would be good friends again, and ' he trusted that the Thames would be well represented by Mr Davies.
