The fireman (Wilton) was found dead, still hanging on to tho brake. Another man, named Meggs, was pinned by a leg, which had to bo amputated to enable him to bo rescued.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION, (Received Nov. 9, 10.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 9. A branch of the League of Nations Union has been established with the object of assisting to install the league as the arbiter of world disputes and to foster mutual understanding and create a world organisation able to guarantee freedom, liberty and peace. A SHOOTING TRAGEDY. (Received Nov! 9, 10.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 9. A tragedy is reported at Matron! Creek, Alatonville. While shielding his daughter from Hubert Joiner, a returned soldier and rejected suitor who was endeavouring to shoot her, ■ Lewis Lambert was shot through the heart. Death was instantaneous. Joiner was found in the scrub with a gunshot wound in his head. His condition is serious. GENERAL ITEMS,
SYDNEY, Nov. 8. A tram conductor. Thomas Gallagher, died as a result of injuries received in tile Coogeo smash. 1 Mr. Storey, who has returned from the Premiers’ Conference, stated that farmers would receive 9s a bushel for wheat for local consumption all the, year round. , This would not involve an increase in the price of bread. The Tennis Association has received a cable from America agreeing to Ti!-. den, Johnston, Washburn, and Hardy playing-in Sydney, Melbourne, and Atlclaido during January. During last week the police made 100 arrests, recovering property of a total value of £3OOO. Nine members of the crew of the Commonwealth steamer Bellnta have been convicted on charges of disobedience and combining to impede the navigation of the ship. They received sentences of from four to 12 weeks’ imprisonment. The charges arose through the cooks refusing duty unless an extra hand was engaged, and the men rerefusing to commence the voyage without the cooks. The Seamen’s Union now threaten to hold a stop-work meeting to discuss what action to take. Mr. Justice Edmunds has decided’ to subpoena 15 members of the Assembly to give evidence before the commission of inquiry into the question of members’ salaries.
PERTH, Nov. 8. The train smash occurred 6n the Mil lar Company’s private line. It was a timber train on which there were only tho crew and a number of mill hands. The victims were for the most part crushed under 'the sleepers. Besides IX killed, two were seriously injured. MELBOURNE, Nov. 8. The Governor-General is ill with diphtheria, but not dangerously. .
