DENBIGH ROAD.

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. May 24/—A dance in aid of the X-ray fund for the Stratford Hospital was given under the auspices of the Hall Board Committee on the sth inst., and was very successful, a fair sum being raised. Miss Riley supplied the music, and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr. Shutter. A large concourse of people gathered to pay tile last token of respect to one of our earliest settlers—l refer to tho death of Mr. E. Wright, of the Radnor Road, who passed peacefully away after a. short illness. . The deceased gentleman, who had reached the ripe old age of 83, was beloved and respected by old and young. We sympathise with Mrs. Wright and family. Tho “flu” is an unwelcome visitor to the Road again, and is the guest of Mr. Merton and family. I wish them a speedy recovery. Mr. F. Anthony is also in hospital suffering from an attack. Two of our lady friends are absent on sick leave, one in the private and one in the public hospital, both going on as well as can be expected. Our footballers are beginning to think themselves some players, having won the two first matches of the season, one versus Clifton and the other against Star (New Plymouth). They are to try conclusions with Stratford juniors next Thursday. Tho Oddfellows’ social evening took place on Thursday .night, but owing to the rough weather, and no doubt to the fact of'so much sickness being in the district, also to tho'borcavcment in some of the Oddfellows’ families, was not so well attended as usual: however, those present had a good time. Mrs. Bianca supplied excellent music, and tho duties of M.C. were performed by Mr. V. Carroll to the satisfaction of everybody, These functions deserve patronage, as they are held to raise funds for the lodge, which deserves all- tho support that can bo given. The.'entertainment committee are put to a great deal of trouble and expense, and the management is good, music first-class, floor, supper and socialibility all of the best, so during the winter' a'good time may be spent fox; a few hours once a month.
