GOLF.

(By, “All-Square.”) Golf promises to make great progress in Taranaki this year judging by tho enthusiasm shown at the opening days of the various clubs. Both the Hawera and Eltham Clubs .have had very good Iriends in their respective landlords. Tho Hawera Goli Club's opening day on Wednesday last, April zl, . proved ono of the most enjoyable tho club have had. Several visitors were present from AVeliington, Stratford and Eltham. Tile weather conditions were good, and the course, thanks to the summer -golf which lias been played, was in very good order. The greens were excellent. Before play, which consisted of mixed foursomes, began, Mr. G. H. Ryan, president of '.•the club, in a very happy little speech, duly declared the season open. Ho •said lie thought all would be gratified at the state of the course—Hawera Star. Quite a gay crowd assembled at tho pretty links on Mr. J. T. Quin’s farm tor the official opening of the season of tlie Eltham Golf Club. Amongst them were several visitors who were paying their first visit to the links, and they were charmed beyond measure at the very fine turf on which to play, and tho gorgeous glimpses of mountain, river, and wood that arc to bo got as ono goes round the course. With Egmont to the north, and Ruapehu far away to the east, both distinctly outlined, one can imagine the charm of the outlook on all sides. Before the players teed off. Mr. Forsyth, the president of the club, welcomed all visitors and members, ant* hoped they would have a pleasant afternoon. He then asked Mr. Tayier, the Mayor, to perform tho opening of the links, Mr. Tayier, in a happy speech, congratulated the club on having tho privilege of playing over such a lino course, and hoped that during the season'the membership, which is the life of any club, would double it- j self. A gootl sports club was an asset to any town, and should bo encouraged in every way. Ho said he felt euro tho members appreciated to the full tho generosity and enthusiasm shown by Mr. Qnin and his sons. Ho hoped tho club would have a most successful season. Mr. Forsyth then drove tho first ball amid applause.— Hawera Star.
