OAKURA.

PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. April 33.—There is a little new life oome to some of the settlors in the district. Per some years the annual meeting of the hall committee was called and only one or two turned up so that there was no committee appointed. The one or two did their best to keep things moving so as to get funds to pay rates and insurance. I hear that when the meeting took place this year a fair number was present and a committee of seven was elected, with, Mr. Guy Bell as chairman, and Mr. Chris. West as secretary. Euchre parties are to be held during the winter. The hall needs painting, but paint is rather dear just now. A leap-year ball was given by the ladies on Friday night, the 16th"inst., and was a great success; it was one of of the nicest dances that lias been held in the_ hall for some time and great credit is due to the committee of ladies in carrying things out. Miss Brown and Miss Bright were the M.O.’s, and they looked after the gentlemen so that there were no wallflowers and things were kept moving. Several songs were sung during the evening, by Miss Hasluck, Mr. Harfrcy, Mr. B. Gordon, and Miss Esme Ludecko gave a Spanish dance and Miss Lily Ballinger a recitation. Mr. Pearson supplied the music in his usual good style, and'Mrs. Pickford and Miss L. Honcyfield played the extras. Refreshments were served between 11 and 12 o’clock. They were good and plentiful. About 1 o’clock all returned home well pleased with their night’s enjoyment. I have not beard yet of any engagements through tiic lean-year ball. A large supply of wood has como down the river since the New Year, and a great deal from Sunday to Tuesday night.
