HAMILTON'S MAYOR RESIGNS.

OVER A DEFEATED LOAN PROPOSAL. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, April 24. A poll to raise £17,000 for the purchase of a steam-generated electricity plant was defeated by 508 votes to 448. Much interest has been taken in the question for months past, and considerable feeling displayed. The council was split into two factions, supporters and opponents. The Mayor (Mr. Watts) and six of the councillors resigned this morning, as they considered the result of the poll equalled a motion of no confidence.
