The track was again holding, as ram • Jell heavily for several hours preceding the racing*. Tho attendance was very large, and the club established a recoid in totalisator , investments, no les* £62,900 going through, against £40,00b last year, this making the huge increase of £23,167 over the previous record. ■The racing opened with the Autumn Handicap, ior which Borealis was installed favourite with £ll9O, Jutland carrying just on £750 odd;, but the dividend payers of tho opening day, Estbonia (£170) and Demagogue (£3oO), wore neglected by backers. , Borealis, on whom A. Reed was substituted roi APDonald, drew the rails, but got sent back last when the barrier rose Ermine was the early leader, Ironi Jutland and Demagogue. Going up the back stretch Ermine and Jutland lost their positions to Demagogue and, Esthonia, while Borealis moved up from last position. The position was unchanged into the straight, where Jutland joined' the leading pah and Rose Queen and 1 Borealis put in great runs. However, Demagogue hung on well and won by a neck, with Rose Queen just in front of Borealis and Jutland, both of which were indifferently ridden. , ... ICinsem, who drew outside position m the Matarawa Hack, -was favourite for the event, with £llOO Opposite her name; Parorangi, which performed well on the opening day, carried £950; while Quiniro, which had Gray’s services, was entrusted: with just on that figure; Dainty Stop, with Oliver in the saddle in place of Morris, also carried over £9OO. Kinsem was quickest out, and followed by Hepta and Passin’ Through, led all the way. In the straight Parorangi, Egmont Park and Dainty' Step threw out challenges, but .Kinsem won very easily. Dainty Step just failed to reach Egiiiont Park. Quiniro long wav back. Eire only faced the starter for the Jackson Stakes, hut it turned out, a good hotting race, as Silver Link, with £2190 odd, had only £3O lead over Acre, while Hymcstra and Miss Gold (bracketed) carried just a few pounds short of £I2OO. O’Shea got Hymestra on his feet very quickly, and ho led Silver Link over tbs first furlong. Here the Taranaki mare -wont to the front,-while Acre tailed off six lengths away.. Hunted along by' APFlynn. Silver Link led into the straight by three lengths, but was palpably' ridden-to death, and Hyraestra collared her half a furlong from, the post. Once in the straight Acre put in a great run and' got within throe parts of a length of Hymestra. Better ridden Acre would undoubtedly have won. As it was O’Shea simply' outrode M'Flynn and Price. Despite a moderate field, the jumping event produced a lot of betting; Goldstream, with over £2IOO, , was first choice, but Zola (£I6OO odd) and l Wishfnl (£1250 odd) also had many friends. The field ran hunched to the first jump, which was safely negotiated, but at tho next fence Army Service came to grief and brought down Zola. This left AA’ishfnl and. Ratana in front, hut Coldstream took the load from the pair five furlongs from home, and won under a pull. Insurrection was hacked for the two-year-oldi handicap as if the event was a foregone conclusion, carrying £2500, Canyon, with £I6OO odd, being second favourite. Rieuse was first out, and attended by Canyon led. to the bend. Here Verbosity took charge and looked an easy winner when Isabel, who was galloping last, put in a sensational run andi got up in time to win by a neck. A good field lined up for the AA 7anganui Stakes, and several of tho runners came in for strong support. Taiamai, who was ridden by Gray, carried just over £I6OO, Kilmoon, who was heavily bandaged in front, had £1350 opposite his name, Oratress (who was ridden by Oliver) and Lovematch both carried over £IOOO. while Client, Gaziquo, Dusky Eve andi Aloutoa Ivanova all carried between the £9OO and £IOOO mark, Kilnisli, with about £BSO, being the outsider of tho field. Gray was very alive at the harrier, and was on tile move when it rose. At the straight entrance Taiamai led by three lengths, followed by' Aloutoa Ivanova and Kilmoon. Passing the stand Aloutoa Ivanova joined Taimai, the rest of the field being bunched. At the seven furlong post Oratress got squeezed out,, and was last to enter tho back stretch, at which stage the two loaders had a six length lead. Halt a mile from home Aloutoa Ivanova retired, and Taiaraai went on alone.- At this stage the leader looted unbeatable, hut from this time on Oratress and Client put in great work, Client getting level with Taiamai at the half distance, and going on won by three lengths. Oratress failed over the last bit, and Taiamai heat her by a similar distance for second, place. Hallowvonia and Kilgour monopolised the betting on the Harrison Handicap, carrying over £3500 between them, Tamo Fox being the best supported of the others. Tile horses were ridden by apprentices, and some poor riding was witnessed. After being in fourth berth most of the way Tame Fox took the lead turning for home and won easily, the outsider Better Luck just failing to catch Haversack. The .meeting concluded with the Farewell Handicap, and a pool of £IO,OOO odd was recorded. Arrowsmith, who drew (lie outside, carried just on £3OOO, hut five of his opponents carried over four figures. Swanee. River and Inah were first to break tho line, hut at the end of iwo furlongs Arrowsmith headed them off. Olsen never gave the topweight any peace and opened up a three lengths iead, but lie tired 1 over the last hundred yards and Ro-Peep got up to win by half a length.
