SOLDIERS’ GRATUITY.

EXTRAORDINARY POSITION. EXISTING* IN AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received Nov. 13, 10.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 13* It appears that Mr. Hughes’ statement regarding the payment of soldiers’ gratuities in cash was made /as the outcome of a conference with financial institutions and the promises _of large employers that they wore willing to take the bonds and cash them. _ It is stated that the hulk of the soldiers realise that the cash payment will mean serious financial embarrassment to the Government and are prepared to accept non-negotiable bonds. The Federal Treasurer is now negotiating with the hankers.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

[The amount of the gratuity is 25 to 30 millions, so it is eminently desirable that there should be some clear understanding as to. whether the bonds can be cashed.]
