RAILWAY RESTRICTIONS.
ON PASSENGER TRAFFIC. BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. WELLINGTON, August 1. To-day's experience of the railway passengers’ restriction policy in connection with tlie trains for Hawke’s Bay and Wanganui districts was that the train, usually of from oight_to ten full cars, was reduced hy about 50 per cent. It is, sav the officials, too early yet to conclude that this substantial reduction will be maintained, but if it is the immediate result will be an increase hi the provision of goods accommodation. It is suggested that this is a matter that might engage the serious attention of the various committees of business men which have been set up to assist the departmental officers. There was no trouble at Larabton station, there was a considerable diminution hi the number of people travelling, but the permit officers were as lenient as circumstances permitted, and, as far as can be gathered, there were no ■heartburnings. Quite a number of those who went away got a permit because they ‘‘wanted to go home;” when they will be able to return is another story.
