RATIONING OF BUTTER.
LIMIT ON PURCHASES. Bt TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. WELLINGTON, August 1. New Zealand’s rationing, unlike that of the Old Country when menaced by submarines, comes after the war. It is already in operation, and the official rationing of railway travelling has begun, for with gentle, perhaps unconscious, irony, the General Manager is determined to put down “joy riding” on the railways. Rationing of an unofficial sort is now in operation with respect to butter. Some shops in Wellington are only selling one pound of butter at a time, having difficulty in providing even that quantity for their customers. In some parts of the Dominion supplies are so short that not always a pound of butter is available, though an official assurance is given that there is plenty of butter in the Dominion, and that it is all a question of distribution.
