LAND FOR SOLDIERS.

WELLINGTON LAND BOARD BUSY. BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. WELLINGTON, August 1. Two hundred and two applications from discharged soldiers for assistance in the purcimso of dwellings and farms were dealt with hy the Wellington Land Board at its meeting concluded to-day. The total amount involved in those transactions was £446,400. There were 113 applications for assistance to purchase dwellings, the bulk of the applications being from Wellington. The board’s recommendations in this particular covered an amount of £90,400. in tiie purchase of farms, improved and partly improvedj 89 applications were dealt with covering an amount of £356.000. An official of the Land Board stated that the number of applications received each month is steadily on the increase and overshadows the ordinary land dealings, although this month the applications by Crown tenafits to transfer land were considerable. _ Each soldier's application is the subject of exhaustive inquiry and every precaution is taken to ensure that the applicant is not being exploited.
