WELLINGTON, July 30. : At a meeting of the Wellington War Relief Association to-day a letter was road from the South Canterbury Relief ; Society stating that it had, within the last month, three eases in which the Government Advances to Settlers Office had written demanding payment of ar- j rears of principal which accrued during soldiers’ absence on service. An opiu- | ion was expressed in tho letter that in I almost every case, tho whole of tho j military pay and allowances had been ’ used in the maintenance of dependents, and that the Advances to Settlers Office should capitalise these, amounts and allowjithem to be paid at the end of the ordinary period of repayment of the mortgage. Tho chairman said that similar cases had occurred in 'Wellington. It was decided to endorse tho action taken by the Timaru society, and that tho Minister of Finance should bo written to urging amended legislation to meet such cases. ; DEMAND FOR POLITICAL ACTION. AUCKLAND, July 30. A general mooting of the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association, attended by 500 members, decided practically unanimously, to endorse the now political platform embodying party action recently framed by the provincial committee. A resolution was passed in favour of tho Now Zealand Constitution being amended to permit of political action, and asking that a special Now Zealand conference bo called to consider the platform as endorsed by the meeting. At a meeting of the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers' Association yesterday a resolution was carried approving the ndrisahlencss of having one association throughout tho Dominion, with one central governing body at AVollington.
