Mr, Payne. ALP., of Auckland, is staying at the Criterion Hotel. Air. Geo. Sangster has been re-ap-pointed chairman of directors of the Midhirst .Dairy Company.
Air. F. C. Tribe, Vogeltown, who recently underwent an operation iii the New Plymouth Hospital, is making favourable progress towards recovery, A Alelbonrno wire states that Mr. A. E. Carey has been appointed Director of Northern Territory for three years, in succession to Dr. Gilruth. Airs. Stanley and Airs. Cyril ALKeilar, of Wellington, have arrived Dorn Auckland and arc staying for a few days at the Criterion Hotel. The many friends of Air. T. Robinson, of Mangorci, who underwent a .severe operation at the local hospital last week will be pleased to bear that bis condition is considerably improved. A Sydney message says that it is understood the estate of tho late Sir Samuel APCaughcy is valued at between one and two millions, the greater portion of which will bo devoted to educational and charitable objects.
AVilliam James Carroll, a native of Canada, an inmate of the Napier Old People's Home, celebrated his 100th birthday to-day. Ho has been a moderate drinker and smoker all his life.— Press Assn.
Air. Juries, draughtsman in the Christchurch city surveyor's office, has been appointed deputy-inspector of fire brigades for the. Dominion. Air. Juries has seen service at the front, previous to which he had fire brigade experience.
Sir James Allen stated in "Wellington on Wednesday that ho had been advised that Mr. ‘Massey and Sir Joseph Ward would arrive in Auckland on Monday next. No Ministers would go to Auckland, because all were busy in AVellington. Sir James Allen thought it probable that Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward would leave Auckland by the Pateena on Tuesday, arriving in Wellington on Wednesday. We regret to have to record the death of Mr. H. .W. Saxton, which took place early this morning after a very brief illness. Mr. Saxton was horn in Shropshire in 1848, and before coming to New Zealand _ in 1876 ho was employed as an engineer on the St. Gothard tunnel and the Adriauoplc railway. AATien he came to Now Zealand lie joined the Survey Department ai New Plymouth and continued in the service until his retirement in 1915. 110 leaves n widow aud a family ol three sous and three daughters to mourn their loss.
