WAITARA.
SEOU OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.
July 25.—An esteemed Tikorangi fanner is amused at hlltham “skiting over its early lambs,” as he has about 50, some of them eight or nine weeks old. That, too, is nothing at all. 1 know another farmer who could knock spots off both of them, who has about a hundred—nearly a year oldl The vicar of St. John’s has gone to Auckland to attend the Synod. Mr. and Mrs. W. Skelton have sold their farm and are leaving for AVhakatane. Mr. Skelton and two of his sons were highly esteemed, members of, the Municipal Band, from which they, will be sorely missed. Iti is probable that a meeting of the public will be called shortly by theMayor to consider the question of a permanent war memorial. The boom for the week is Rennie’s sale. I hear that customers come.from every town from New Plymouth to Hawera to these sales, which illustrates what good advertising of bargain prices, will do in attracting business. livery day a department is employed in dealing with mail orders. Mr. AV. J. Watson is building a good house on his farm at AVaitara Road. Nearly all of thei farms in this district appear to have changed hands during the past year or two. In another month or two the “cockey’s holiday” will be over and we shall be hearing again the throb of the milking machine. Some of the farmers will welcome the spring, as it will .herald the monthly cheques; but. others will regret the routine of milking day and night, and every day. There is no eight hours’ day and fire days a week for the dairy farmer, and if the hours of work of his family and himself were worked out at so much per hour, it is possible that it would not be much, if any, more than the ordinary working man gets, and the worry thrown in. When the subject is looked into closely, one must concede that the average dairy farmer earns all ho gets, even witlj the present high prices.
All the world loves a bargain! The Big Store, Waitara will ho the liappv hunting ground for bargains when the big winter sale starts on Saturday next. Get to it.*
