COLD STORAGE.

- CONGESTION IN GI.BOBNB. GISBORNE, Juao IT* Owing' to the restricted number off insulated oversea steamers that have loaded at Gisborne recently,, there is at large accumulation of meat in the local) freezing works. , It is estimated by the manager of one of the local works chat there are not less than 700,000! carcases in cold storage awaiting ship* ment. A vessel is due here about thej 27th inst. to take 40,000 carcases," but it is considered that this will .. not re* lieve.the position to any extent. Only one steamer is expected the following month, and thafc is taking 20,000 car* cases, so- that the position from the works point of view is really becoming acute. -■ The works will shortly be clos* ing down, but, all the same, the mim* ber of stock for killing has been! greatly restricted, owing to inadequate insulated shipping space provided fon the Gisborne district. Another works manager stated thah he was accepting no cattle whatever for killing, and was only killing sheep* and that was being done in restricted numbers. All the storage available ah the various works was pretty well en* tirely taken up, and unless more in* sulated shipping space was made available the position was likely to become acute. The shipping at this port during the past six months has provided ample space for wool, the export by one ship! alone, the Vfax llpal, being valued at almost £500,000, but the insulated space has been entirely inadequate. Thfli largest amount of meat taken by any one ship during the last six months was 40 s 000 carcases, the usual ship* ment being 20,000 carcases.' , accommodation was built at two of the works,' but even with this the hvuhberd for killing had to be restricted.
