WAITARA.
PROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT. June 21 At a special meeting of the borough council on Wednesday the financial position was gone into, and it was suggested that th© rate which has recently.been struck should be collected at once instead of as customary in six months’ time. The Mayor- said the council could legally get them in a fortnight’s time, but some of the councillors such a step should not be reverted to, ~ but that an appeal should be mad© to ratepayers to pay up. The Slayer thought it would be, absolutely necessary to raise a loan to clear up th© position, but Councillor Ogle thought it would be better to keep clear of a further loan. It was no use the council spending beyond its income and have to pay more interest on that account. The council should arrange its finances to pay its way. The Armagh is expected in the readstead next Wednesday. The Wellington Coal Commission tried to arrange for 300 tons of coal to b© delivered at Waitara from Australia, but owing to opposition in certain quarters the negotiations broke down. Another rise in tobraldo, th© best washing dress material ever worn, is due next season, when th© price will be 2s lid a yard.
