MUZZLING THE PRESS.
GERMAN METHODS. WASHINGTON, Jan. 10. The State Department lias issued copies of secret telegrams sent by the German censqr to the press last spring, prohibiting the publication of certain subjects, and suggesting other subjects for discussion. Instructions were to prohibit references to the following:—Strikes, internal unrest, revolutions in Leipzig, unions’ disturbances in Konigsberg (Prussia), excesses and unrest in Prague, Austrian Lower House debates; also the journey of Russian emigrants from Switzerland through Germany, the economic situation, Russian reports of the terrible conditions in Warsaw, and German importations from neutrals especially Holland. ’ The instructions also prohibit references to aerial attacks on London, Germany’s lack of commodities, the decreased production of 1 coal and steel, advertisements offering to sell dogfiesh.
The censor _ deprecates reference to America’s assistance to the Allies, and added: “It must not be overlooked that the United States is arming with great energy and 'tenacity.” The newspapers were urged to point out that the Austrian war aims will only be achieved if she adheres to her understanding with Germany to hold out till victory is obtained.
