WAITARA

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Dec. 9.—The Waitara Chamber of Commerce is bestirring itself in regard to tho closing up of the Moknu River by timber brought down by tho late floods. Tho matter is a serious ono, and the Chamber should bo supported by every public body interested in tho local coal supply. The Chamber may not of itself be able to do very much, but if it sets the ball rolling and can obtain the support of Awakino and Clifton Counties, the Waitara Harbour Hoard, the New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce as well as the Mokau district authorities, combined action may result in the Government coming to tho aid of Mokau to remedy tho damage caused by force majeure. * Tho headmaster of tho State school and his assistants are to be congratulated upon the results of the hist proficiency examination. In his report Mr. S. AVylho stated that “all the pupils of our school passed and, with ono exception gained proficiency, the other gaining competency. For five consecutive years there has not been a failure in Standard VI.”

In accordance with an arrangement made at tho last meeting of the Borough Council, several councillors inspected the piers of tho Waitara Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, when it was found that two of the piles forming part of tho piers were damaged. One of the piles was badly fractured, and it was regarded as a matter that would require urgent attention. It will be seen that the recent floods, bringing down as they did vast quantities of timber, are responsible for a great deal of damage to Waitara. The damage to tho wharf will involve an expenditure of thousands; the repairing of tho bridge will probably amount to a considerable sum, in addition to minor damage to the sections on the river banks.

It would annoy any lady to know her dressmaker coidd not make a dress for Xmas. Lucky for her and all ladies Rennie's are offering some of the smartest ready-to-wear summer dresses, and the daintiest blouses you ever saw at a little more than the price of the materials. .
