THE TOWN CHIMING CLOCK.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l think Mr. Patou is deserving of the thanks of the community <it> large, and especially invalids who visit this town in search of rest and quiet, in having the courage to tackle that invention of the devil, the chiming clock. What about the imprecations, etc., it is responsible for?—and who wants to know how the quarter-hours are fleeting either by day or night ? It appears that this clock was got simply to be in the fashion at the time, but clocks chiming during the hours of the night have been voted nuisances long ago. The travelling public on the Continent and elsewhere will not tolerate chiming clocks, as they consider that when folks retire to rest they wish to sleep and not be kept awake by the monotonous chiming of a clock so irritating and so OFT IN THE STILLY NIGHT.
