TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.
MEETING AT NEW PLYMOUTH. A meeting of tho Taranaki branch of tho Teachers’ Institute was hold at Now Plymouth on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Dowling presided over a good attendance. Three new members were elected, bringing tho membership up to 163 active members aud six honorary members. Considerable discussion took place on tho conditions under which scholarships are awarded, and the executive was instructed to go into the matter further and to report to tho next meeting of the institute.
Several letters concerning the censoring of pictures wore received. The secretary reported that this question had been considered by tho executive, who had asked Sir. A. Erskino, of Wellington, to represent tho institute at the recent conference in Wellington. Sirs. Dowling, Miss E. Andrews and Sir. G. Pope were nominated as delegates to tho Easter Conference. Others may be nominated by sending nominations to tho secretary by Doce-mber 15. It was decided to forward tho following remit to the covferonce: “That all relieving teachers should bo paid a fixed salary.” On the suggestion of Sirs. Dowling, tho secretary was instructed to write to tho conveners of discussion centres asking them to hold meetings to consider tho proposed changes to the constitution of tho New Zealand Educational Institute. It was decided to nominate Sir. Endey (Otago) for tho position of president of tho Kc(v Zealand Educational Institute.
