A Turkish communique says;—ln artillery combats at tho Dardanelles the enemy Cruisers, torpedo boats, and monitors participated in unsuccessful bombardments on Ahafarta, Ari Bumu and Seddul-Bahr. The fol'owing is a copy of a telegram 'sent on November 8 from the general headquarters in the Mediterranean to the War Office when the Suvla, operations were first planned. The information was subsequently verified and indicated that there was a considorab’o amount of water in the Biyuk-Anafarta valley and on ' the Suvla plain, but complete preparations, which tho telegram details, wore made_ to guard against the -risks of trusting to the water or of' inability speedily to develop the local resources. Dealing with the at Anzac, the telegram states that a highlevel reservoir had been built with 30.000 gallons capacity, and a pipe system of distribution to tanks. A-sta-tionary engine which was capable of filing the reservoir was brought, from Egypt, but broke down at one period. A further supply was to ho secured from lighters and water-ships. These were under naval control and no details w'ere available, so they arranged ■ that the army’s responsibility be confined to emptying the lighters and distributing the water to the troops, the Navy undertaking the replacing of empties with full ones. Tho Admiral’s arrangements were considered adequate Jo provide a full supply. Further, they obtained ship tanks and ‘troughs with a capacity of 195.000 gallons for. erection on the . beach or for use at local wells,. and | also 300 water buckets and sis pumps. [lt was stated in the House of Commons that some men, after the Suvla Bay landing;-had died of thirst, This statement is probably the reply to the allegation.].
