A FAREWELL SOCIAL.

AT HILLSBOROUGH. The settlors of Hillsborough gave a farewell social on Friday evening to Messrs. Nelson Hill, S. Parker and W. Bishop, who have volunteered for active service and will shortly bo leaving for the front. The, hall was crowded, and the gathering proved to be one of the most successful that has ever been held in the district. .Mr. H. C. Sampson presided, and made a short appropriate speech. Hie following programme was contributed:—Song, “Till the boys come home,” Miss ivy Scott (encore, “Its the navy”); duel, “Who Smashed Bill Kaiser,” Messrs. Smith and Key (encore, a skit written by Mr. L. Smith, “Oh William, dear ’ William, come home”); song. “Oh, you’re the one,” Mr. W. Keys" (encore, “Facts”); song. “S’nice S’minco S’pio.” Mr. L. Smith (encore, “Mary Ann she’s after tne”); song. “Your King and' Country need you,” Miss Leach (encore, “Perfect Day”). Recitations wore also given by Mr. G. Goldsworthy. Mr*. Skelton played the accompaniments. During an interval-Mr. G. Goldsworthy, on behalf of the settlers, presented each of the departing troopers with a wristlet watch, and alter referring to the sacrifice the farmers were making in giving their boys to the Empire, said they were not going to take part in a capitalists war, hut to assist the boys who were already at the front in protecting the women and children of New Zealand and of the Empire from the horrible atrocities and cruelties'which had been perpetrated in Belgium. In conclnsion, ne gave the boys this message: Live a clean life, fight' bard and fair, with one single thought—victory. An excellent supper was provided by the Indies, and subsequently dancing was indulged in. Mr. A. E. H. Pearson provided the, music:, and Messrs. L. Bishop and H. Barriball acted as M.C.’s. The gathering terminated with the singing of “An Id Lang Syne.” the company forming ii ring and touting hands in the ordinary way. with the guests standing in the centre.
