PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE.

VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED

The New Plymouth Patriotic Committee met ou Tuesday night at the Town Hall . Present: Messrs. C. Carter (act-ing-chairman), C. H. Burgess, IV. C. Weston, 0. N. Firth, J. S. S. Medley, D. J. Hughes, Hal. Goodacro, J. ft. •Hill, IV. A. Cqllis, C. E. Bellringer, L. M. Monteath, J. Baton, IV. J. Chaney, E. Griffiths, Captain Allen, Rev. A. H. Colvilo and Adjutant Home. Mr. Burgess, Die representative of tho committee at the recent conference of patriotic societies at Wellington, gave an outline at some length ot tho business transacted, particulars of which have already been published..—A vote of thanks was accorded Air. Burgess, and discussion on tho matters touched on in his report was postponed until further information is received from the Government. Mr. Carter said It was necessary that tho boundaries over which the committee was to work should be defined, and he mentioned that North Taranaki and Inglewood wore appointing delegates to consider the question. —Messrs. C- Carter, C. E. Bellringer and J. ft. Hill wera appointed a committee to confer with delegates of the adjoining societies to fix tho boundaries. A letter was received from the Riwaka (Nelson) Recruiting Association, stating that at a meeting of the association it was resolved “That in our opinion conscription should be introduced, and that a special session of Parliament should bo convoked forthwith to pass the necessary legislation.” Tho letter set out at length the reasons why tho association considered conscription necessary.—lt was resolved to inform the Riwaka Association that recruiting has been proceeding so well in Taranaki under the voluntary system that tho committee docs not consider the time opportune to discuss conscription. A telegram was received from tho secretary of the Southland Patriotic Society! asking if tho Taranaki district agreed to pooling patriotic funds in an international schcpio.—Air. Burgess said the Taranaki district was in favour of the National scheme, but ho could not say auythjng about tho feeling in regard to pooling funds. It wag decided to forward tho telegram to the Taranaki War Relief Association. It was decided that tho committee should do all in its power to assist tho Central School Carnival on Thursday. A sub-committee was appointed to go into the question of paying the war nsk on life insurance of men going to the front,
